It’s all about timing

The last important point to remember about engaging with young people is that timing is everything. Discussing tricky subjects when children are stressed or tired for example is going to result in them being immediately disengaged. Discussing these topics when people are relaxed, happy and open will yield much more helpful responses.

Before having a chat, ask yourself:

  • Do I have enough time to say what I want to say, and hear them out too?
  • Are they hungry, thirsty, tired, distracted or stressed?
  • Am I hungry, thirsty, tired, distracted or stressed?
  • Do I need to act at this moment, or is it better to wait until a better time?
  • Can I organise an activity to do together so it reduces the pressure for both of us if we have to have a tricky conversation?
  • Where and when is my child the happiest? Will that be the best opportunity for an honest discussion with them?
  • Am I prepared or able to take the action needed to help them yet or do I need time to educate myself on what to do?
