Privacy and security

Privacy & Security refers to the control that you have over your personal information and how that information is used. Your personal information is any information that can be used to determine your identity, and includes who you are, where you are, or how to contact you.

How does this impact young people with a disability?

Many young people have heard about the importance of privacy and security, however educators report that online privacy is conceptually quite a hard issue for young people with a disability to establish. Young people are vulnerable not only because they are in a sensitive period transitioning into adulthood, but also as they have complex developmental needs and may experience difficulties making their own decisions. They may also have health needs which require additional support, and even as adults may result in a frequent reliance on secondary decision makers to help them protect their privacy and rights.

Password security appears to be the most prominent security area young people are aware of, however repetition and reinforcement of other key categories of information is not understood as comprehensively.
