Screen Time is the time spent using a computer or device. Screen time in a wellbeing context refers to leisure time spent in front of or using screens.
More than a quarter of children with a chronic or long-standing illness spend five or more hours a day online and are significantly more likely to say they had not received any online safety education. Research shows young people themselves generally did not see excessive screen time as an issue. If anything, their concern was often the opposite. However, some older teens and young adults have voiced regret about the amount of time they spend online. They were conscious of the addictive nature of screens and spoke of wasting time online when they could be more productive or feeling that they would rather be out and about in the community talking to ‘real’ people than being stuck at home staring at a computer screen.
